The Power of a School Dog

🐾 The Power of a School Dog: How Buddy, Lucca, and Rusty Are Transforming Our School Trust 🐾

In recent years, an exciting trend has emerged in schools across the globe: the introduction of dogs into the learning environment. Fioretti Trust is proud to have not one, but three amazing school dogs—Buddy, Lucca, and Rusty—who are making a profound impact on our pupils and staff alike.

Whilst the idea of having animals in a school setting may seem unconventional to some, the benefits of a school dog are both scientifically backed and incredibly heartwarming. Here’s how Buddy, Lucca, and Rusty are contributing to a positive, enriching school culture.

    1. Improved Pupil Wellbeing

Buddy, Lucca, and Rusty help reduce stress and anxiety, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere for pupils. They provide emotional support for those who need it most.

    2. Enhanced Social Skills and Emotional Intelligence

Through caring for and interacting with the dogs, pupils develop empathy, teamwork, and non-verbal communication skills—vital tools for personal growth.

    3. Boosted Academic Performance

Pupils often read aloud to our dogs, building confidence and improving literacy skills. Our dogs also help create a sense of security and calm that enables pupils to focus on their studies, improving performance and engagement.

    4. Increased Physical Activity

Our dogs encourage pupils to get active. They love going for walks and playing games with the pupils during breaks, helping to improve health and overall well-being.

    5. Strengthening School Community

Buddy, Lucca, and Rusty have become cherished members of our school communities, helping pupils thrive, especially those who struggle in a traditional classroom setting. Their presence in our schools has broken social barriers, encouraging shy pupils to engage with others. From greeting pupils at the gates to offering calm during stressful times, they bring joy and connection to every aspect of school life.

    6. A Positive Role Model for Responsibility

Having dogs in schools teaches responsibility. Care routines are embedded into school life, giving pupils a hands-on opportunity to learn about commitment and nurturing. This responsibility helps to inspire good habits that can carry over into their academic and personal lives.
